How to Choose HDPE Pipes: IS-4984 Standards & Pressure Ratings Explained

Why HDPE is Replacing PVC in Agricultural Piping

Historically, rigid PVC pipes were standard in farms. However, PVC pipes easily crack when driven over by tractors, degrade rapidly in Jharkhand's harsh summer heat, and require multiple glue joints. High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipes offer flexibility, come in seamless 100-meter coils, and resist heavy loads and UV sunlight, making them the new standard for field water lines.

Deciphering HDPE Ratings: What is PN and PE Grade?

PE Grade (PE 100 vs. PE 80): PE 100 is the modern material grade. It has a higher hydrostatic strength, which means the pipe walls can be thinner while holding the same pressure, resulting in lighter, cheaper pipes.

Pressure Rating (PN Rating): PN stands for Pressure Nominal. A PN-6 pipe can handle a working pressure of 6 kg/cm² (approx 6 Bar). A PN-10 pipe is rated for 10 kg/cm². For suction lines or deep submersible pump delivery, always use PN-10 or PN-12.5. For flat-ground main line agricultural delivery, PN-6 is standard and highly cost-effective.

Spotting Duplicate HDPE Pipes on the Market

To save money, some manufacturers use recycled plastic garbage, which results in brittle pipes that burst at low pressures. Always check for the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) mark: IS 4984 printed along with a CML licence number. Look for a glossy, uniform black color without white or yellow speckles (which indicate impure recycled fillers).
